Used to live right off that line at what was known as "the jive a** el stop" at ashland and jarvis. The red line has been a mess since the 80's and remains such to this day. I don't recommend an evening ride on the red line at all. If you're from out of town you should look up Chicago red line crime, there's a ton of reports of stabbings, robberies etc etc etc. Especially at night.
