No question that what you guys describe is blackmail and / or extortion and is a federal offense if committed across state lines. That being said, what these perps are counting on is that you are weak and will bend to their will (SonChi said as much in a different thread on the NoVA reports). They are counting on you not reporting them because it is a hassle and you are afraid of public and personal exposure. The thing to do is call their bluff. They are probably some obese halitotic pitiful creature living in the basement of their parents and will not proceed beyond this blackmail extortion attempt.

To avoid getting yourself into such situations, always use a burner or VOIP like Pinger / TextFree and do not use your real name under any circumstances. Like SWs, escorts and to a lesser extent SBs, use an alter-ego or an untraceable nickname. The other thing is to maintain zero social presence on the internet.

What is your real number, home landline or mobile number tied to your name? How did he get your real phone number, were you using your mobile number tied to your name? Tell him to meet you at the local Walmart because you only have cash and don't know how to use apps. If he shows up, do the needful, don't worry, he won't show up.
