I can't answer your questions specific to GL apartment, but typically you are not supposed to knock on the door. They don't want neighbors hearing knocs=ks on the door all day as it raises suspicion. You text when walking down the hall, at the door etc. And they will view through the peep hole and let you in. Don't start talking when they open the door. Go inside, be quiet, whisper hello etc.
