To those of you who responded, these are great tips. Thank you.

Still, my point was just how much more you have to navigate the system when you're dealing outside the normal world of credit and being a good customer prospect. It's been annoying as hell. The customer service is abysmal and it's clear many companies feel they're doing you a favor. Just sharing that part of it.

The few times I've had to contact visa about my prepaid cards were a case study in how to make you feel small.

She said her boss told her if she leaves early she won't get paid at all for the day, including hours worked up until that point. Maybe she was just trying to get me to be more generous but I don't think so..

I wish I could still buy OneVanilla. I don't see them anymore, and the cards that look like them don't work on seeking. I have posted about Blackhawk cards, available at Gelson's.

I have also sung the praises of TracFone on this site many times. It is very very reasonable in price. Like maybe $80 / year.
