However, I'm pretty sure you can pay however you want and just leave the key in the room. After checkout time, they just assume you are gone and come in. I never "checkout" at hotels anymore. I always just leave the key behind and head home.

In my hometown, there were some cheaper motels that would let you book a "short stay" of 3 hours, just perfect for a get together. I have not found any in Raleigh. Do they exist?

If I go for a cheapie like Days Inn or Red Roof, they seem to be about $80 for an overnight. Can I pay cash at the desk and just leave the key in the room when I leave? How about booking online with a pre loaded card and check in / check out with an app?

Any pointers from the old pros out here?
