A long time ago, when first venturing forth, got burned twice. These were from STG ads where they would provide prompt text replies, pictures, and even sent phony locations before any deposit was given. It should be a red flag if they respond quickly to texts but refuse any calls or video chats without explanation, or they charge a fee for some sort of verification. Rule of thumb should be to refuse deposit upfront. There are plenty of legitimate providers out there that make it a point not to require anything until face to face. The only exceptions would be verified, higher end providers with plenty of reviews on Tryst, PD, etc. Where they are highly requested and use a form of deposit to secure a time in their schedule. Again, these providers will typically have dozens if not hundreds of actual reviews, in addition to being verified on one of those sites. It doesn't hurt to be skeptical, and anyone legitimate wants to be safe and avoid a scam as much as you do. Higher end providers likely won't call or video chat either, but they will at least point you in the right direction to where you can see proof that they are legitimate (like a website that features reviews for them).
