There are many downsides to tipping genrously upfront. My main reason is to see their A-game. If the tip does not bring their A-game, I move on. A $50 tip seems to be a generous tip. A $40 tip very good. A $30 tip good. There is not much difference in $20 when you are paying over $300 but the perception and mindset can be very different.
