In spite of the misleading name, most of those products actually contain isobutyl nitrite or isopropyl nitrite, not amyl nitrite, and it's often diluted with acetone. They're sold as solvents. While they can have some similar effects, they only last a few minutes. They can also cause inhalation burns, have been known to cause cancer, and in the case of isopropyl nitrite, blindness (rare, and not fully understood how).

Amyl Nitrate is a prescription medication, and very rarely prescribed these days since its been almost completely replaced by nitroglycerine tablets / sprays / patches for its original medicinal use.
