If you've never been to Detroit before, I recommend daytime exploration first so you become familiar with the neighborhoods and the geography. I also recommend reading up on the history so you understand how and why some of this urban decline and depopulation happened, and don't just buy into racist stereotypes. Now you should then also cruise around at night, and check your level of comfort. That being noted, the majority of street crime is targeted and not against random passerby. Of course you can be unlucky. As a concealed carrier, I scan my environment for armed persons. In the last ten years, I have seen just two individuals Open Carry. One inside a Sterling Heights Walmart, one in a Utica gas station.

Its amusing to think pimps and assorted bad guys open carry. You need a legally purchased gun registered to you. You can't be a felon or domestic abuser.

There is no question there are lots of guns in Detroit, but they aren't being OC. OC is prohibited in any wheeled vehicle and you better be showing the entire gun. No jacket or hoodie covering some of it.

I've seen Chaldean auto mechanics open carry WHILE working on cars — and their shop wasn't even in a particularly high crime area! LOL!

I should have been more clear in what I mean — which is that an open carry state AND a high crime rate means there's just a lot of guns around, period, for better and worse. Again I don't think this is a good forum for debate on that, only to acknowledge the reality.
