Scammers then googled his phone #, figured out his real name and identified him on social like Facebook or LinkedIn. Now, they're using that knowledge + his outreach against him.

If so that's a very valuable lesson for everyone. Never use your real phone or email. Get a burner phone or at least use an app like Second Line or Sideline so the contact coming from a different #. Never share your face either just find a picture online and send that.

I am not sure how they could force you to pay black mail money. If you were using a hobby phone and you didn't do anything to reveal your true identity, 99.9% of threats are idle.
