What most likely happened is that either a provider's email account or laptop was compromised. Now imagine if that laptop had my real name and normal email address on it? Imagine if evidence you banged hookers was in the hands of foreign cybercriminals?

It may be less of a risk than before but in the past there were also blackmail sites that paid people to capture names, pictures and telephone numbers of random men on dating and mongering sites. They would then post the info on sites with names like ExposingJohns or PredatorAlert. They made sure your info would pop up if searched. I saw some real names and pictures on those sites. They caught some of my fake info. I was contacted by an ostensibly third party who offered to get the info taken down in exchange for a four figure fee. In my opinion the only thing that "keeps both of us safe" in the providers eyes is some sort of bullshit idea of mutually assured destruction.
