I believe this would be the same as hearing from the IRS. They don't call, they send regular old postal mail. If they were serious someone with a badge would show up at your door. It is easy to spoof a number on caller I'd. Of course on the cop tv shows they make phone calls all the time so I could be wrong. But above all else remember you don't have to talk to anyone. Not talking is better than lying. Lying will get you into trouble or least provide an "in" to the investigator.
