What do they do with it? If they don't have legit immigration status, it seems hard to open a bank account, and even with a green card, the vast sums of cash would alert authorities looking for drug dealers. Even wiring money to China would seem to include some form of converting cash to a number on a computer screen. Next time you lie down, and the mattress seems a bit lumpy, you might be lying on enough money to buy a house.

Checking accounts are easy to opened with a tax identification number (TIN). A temporary Social Security number is also easy to acquire. That and a passport is all you need to open up a bank account. Ive assisted a few providers with opening up accounts, before. They can do it themselves, if they go to a bank with associates that speak Chinese in the SGV.
There are small Chinese run shops all over the metro LA area that ship packages and transfer money to China as a side line. They can be restaurants, bookstores, phone stores or markets. Chinese immigrants can send money converted to RMB to relatives and also send products that are difficult to purchase in their part of the home country. I’ve sent items to providers who retuned to China for one reason or another. Shipping rates are much less than going to UPS, FedEx or DHL.
