As for the ants, they have to come from outside. The whole colony may get in, lived for a while without being seen. But all of a sudden they have to come out into the house for food and water. Maybe there's none outside or they are blocked from getting out.

It's a lot easier to track them and seal the outside entrance. After a few seasons they can't find novel ways to get in. You can't really seal the inside because ants can always find a way into the house from between the walls, like window and door frames, cabinets.
