This is exactly right. It isn't that lying to the local or the federal police is itself illegal (unless you've been put under oath; then it's perjury), it's that if the police think that you lied, then they're much more likely to charge you, and if they can show that you lied, then they can often really fuck you over. In fact, since they know a lot more about the case they're putting together than you do, saying anything at all to them is dangerous. The best advice is neither to lie nor to tell the truth but not to answer their questions at all. That's your Constitutionally protected right.
