I have used TextNow before. I was not able to mute the notification that I had received a text message. I switched to TextFree and that one does allow for muting the notification.

My experience using apps in general is that they are not as robust as an actual phone. So, there are occasional blackouts. Text messages are not lost. But there could be periods where the texts may not be actually sent or received for several hours. Most of the time though, they are just as quick as a real phone. I experienced more blackouts with TextNow.
