So, let's talk about herpes. There are two viruses that are commonly lumped together when talking about herpes. HSV1 and HSV2. HSV1 is more commonly associated with oral herpes (literally cold sores) and HSV2 is more commonly associated with genital herpes, but either strain can actually infect either area. Here's the thing, somewhere around 70% of the world's adult population has HSV1 herpes. If you've been sexually active with multiple partners, especially if you did anything unprotected (including kissing), there's an excellent chance you have it. It's incredibly common, and most of the time they don't even test for it on general STI screenings unless you specifically ask for it. I guarantee almost all of us here, as well as virtually any provider who does anything unprotected (again, including kissing), probably has HSV1. The majority of infections are asymptomatic, and most will never even know they have it. Many people who have it didn't even get it from sexual contact. They could have gotten it from sharing a drinking glass with someone, or from a kiss on the lips from their aunt when they were a little kid, or even from shaking someone's hand who had just touched their mouth or eyes and then touching your own. HSV2 is somewhat less common, but aside from it being more commonly associated with genital outbreaks as opposed to oral, it's not clear that it's any more serious.

Basically if you're worried about herpes at all, don't ever do anything without a condom and don't ever kiss anyone whose lips may have been in contact with anyone else's besides yours at some point. But somehow I doubt that you guys are going to abide by those rules, so instead I would say maybe avoid any contact if you see suspicious sores or lesions on someone, but otherwise don't worry too much about it, because the majority of people have it and it's not really a big deal.
