A lot of the ladies hide their online vs offline presence, so don't pay any attention to that. You can see when the ladies are particularly active as well as their level of desperation by how often they bump their ads. The site is great once you get the hang of it. Once you get a few safety ratings under your belt, you will never be asked for a reference ever again. You may even find someone on there that you have previously visited using another site that you can ask to rate you. Depending on that desperation level I previously mentioned, you can probably find someone that doesn't need any sort of reference or safety rating whatsoever.

And ALWAYS look at the ratings for the reds. I like to see how long ago or how recent they are as well as that can tend to have a lot to do with my decision making process.

Good info and well said. Just make sure you are looking at the ones that post recently, like in the last few hrs, and subscribe. The site is ARCHAIC and I was way thrown off as I despise a horrid navigating site, of which it is, but you will get used to it.
