Sorry to hear about your experience. It has been years since I saw her and she never asked for a deposit then. I never pay a deposit. It's insulting and described perfectly in your story. There is no penalty if they ghost or cancel. Once they have your deposit, they have little incentive to cater to you. There maybe legitimate providers who ask for deposits but I won't pay it on principle. It's like feeding the bears, more will try it.
