Just out of curiosity, when you say " 6", are you saying $60? Because that Aliyah chick is talking $400 for an hour, which is freaking laughable on its face. When leaving the zona always go to the valet stand in front of HK and get the zona shuttle free ride to the border and just tip the driver a few dollars.

This is a great inside tip as I have never taken the HK free shuttle, even when I had the HK card one year. I'll definitely try it out soon.

Danny offers a lot of good info. As far as zona cops. Keep in mind for them getting assigned to the zona norte area is a big payday for them. They are exposed to all the sex tourists with pockets full of money. They do not like lights or cameras. So many of the shakedowns occur in the fringe areas.

One shakedown that has become a little to common is working in cahoots with a taxi driver. They will pull your cab over and leave the driver alone and will only be concerned with finding a way to extract money from you. A rather new tactic is to tell you they need to check your cell phone. If they find porn or nudes they will tell you that you have violated a serious mexican law and could be looking at serious prison time. And guys this has happened to are usually happy to get out of this one by paying a bribe. So keep your phones clean.

In that case catch a $5 dollar taxi to the zona. Just be sure to make it clear before you get in " $5 to Hong Kong." I have never heard of cab shakedowns going in to the zona, only leaving.

The cartels have a agreement to avoid violence in the Zona and in the tourist areas of TJ. There is still some low level drug dealers in TJ. Most of them hang out on Constitucion between the alley and Cohuilla st on the East side It is really ridiculous how openly the dealers operate.

It's been a while since I've been to TJ but I never had any problems, cops or otherwise. Of course I never did anything stupid as well. LOL.

The Zona being "protected" by the cartels made me think of Boystown in Nuevo Laredo. It's literally a walled in compound with cops at the entrance. Talk about keeping the playground safe. LOL.

The biggest concern for me has always been that steering clear of the cops is a bigger concern than the rateros. That being said, I lived in San Diego for 20 years and traveled to Zona Norte dozens of times for the sole purpose of mongering. While I've had a few unsettling 'incidents,' I've also had some of the best mongering experiences of my life. It's one of my favorite places on earth for seeking carnal pleasures and I recommend it highly to almost anyone. This is not intended to be a comprehensive list, but here are a few pointers for having a good experience in TJ: 1) Exchange your dollars for pesos before crossing. Working in pesos will give you a more favorable rate for everything you purchase. 2) Cross as a pedestrian and take a taxi to the Zona for $5. Tell the driver you will give him $5 for a ride to the Zona before you get in or else he may try to charge you more. Don't skimp on the $5 by walking to the Zona. The vast majority of robberies occur on or near the pedestrian bridge to the Zona even though it happens infrequently. You will circumvent this peril altogether by taking a taxi to and from the border crossing. 3) DO NOT ATTEMPT TO BUY DRUGS IN THE ZONA. You may like to party and let loose, but this is the number one way to find trouble in TJ both with thugs and with the policia. People will offer everything under the sun, but just say, "No thank you. " 4) To that point, do not accept "Help" from anyone who offers it. In addition to drugs, someone might offer you access to women or god knows what else. Kindly decline and keep moving. Don't make "friends" in the Zona. 5) Another rule I observe, not just in TJ but everywhere I travel, is to keep walking. Don't loiter too long. If you're scoping out the paraditas in the alley of Coahuila, it's fine to stop and talk to them along the way (hopefully you speak some Spanish). Just don't stand there too long for no good reason. I suspect this guy had a bad experience or two. Nothing he says matches up with any of my many TJ visits over the years. To begin with, you won't find talent on Ave Revolucion. I started out by saying I haven't been there in years, its been 11 in fact. It was NEVER my desire to go there, I had been there 2 -3 times as a teenager. In my late 20's I had 2 coworkers, 1 from NYC the other from New Jersey, who I couldn't stand, 1 payday these guys start going to TJ. All they could talk about after was TJ, they let everyone know not so much by direct conversation, but by repeating the events to eachother loudly during lunch or break or when ever. Understand these 2 were connected at the hip. This was in Los Angeles, 2 guys stereo typical loud obnoxious New England types were very unpopular generally speaking, I really didn; t care as I didn't work directly with them. Point is, after a couple of months, they had become somewhat of bad joke, telling everyone how they had rented a place down there and moved in their "stripper Girlfriends" the joke being they believed that these stripper / hookers had suddenly stopped all operation during the week keeping there legs crossed to save up for Friday. Sunday for these 2 clowns. I had just broken up with some **** I had moved in, and by chance, that Monday after I moved her out These cats approached me and asked if I wanted to go south. No I really did not want to and had a date with a hot blonde already lined up. Idk what happened but Friday, that ended up cancelled by noon.
