It works like this:

1. You reach agreement with a provider re price and deliverables. Be wary if this process is exceedingly smooth.

2. A few minutes pass, (to enhance credibility I suppose.).

3. She tells you she needs "verification. " Not cash, just proof that you've purchased the gift card. She requires you to send a picture of the card. Because you are a first-timer, and no, you may not pay in cash.

4. Thank you she says; now send the final 4 digits of the Redemption Code. She'll insist it's safe, because it's "only" the last 4 digits.

5. You are now toast. The first 9 digits are printed in plain text on the card, which photo you sent her in step 3 above.

Oddly enough, eBay obscures the first 9 digits under the scratch so you can't see them, but it's not blocked at all at the bottom of the card.
