Does it happen? Sure, probably. I've never heard of it happening from men, only from the girls that act like they meet up to scam guys, but I'm sure in the history of the universe it has happened.

I can tell you from my own anecdotal experience though, that its a scam. If I had to guess I would say that 99% of the time its a total scam. Maybe even 99.9%. I will warn you that if you pursue this you will almost certainly be scammed and lose money, or just waste your time outright.

However, give it a shot and maybe you'll get lucky. Anything is possible. If you're smart and only send money after meeting (if you can POSSIBLY pull that off which I doubt), then you have nothing to lose (except the $10 or whatever to sign up for a month of OF).

If I were you though, I would stick to the sugar bowl. Much favorable cost / benefit analysis.
