It's been done that way for at least 30 years. They don't want you knowing exactly where they are if you are not coming. There's a lot of stuff a creepy guy can do if he knows exactly where a lady is staying.

That's normal, they want to make sure you're actually there and not wasting time. It also gives you time to scope out the hotel before waltzing right in, assuming you can see the rooms from the parking lot.
