I have several friends on WeChat and not a single one has brought this up to me or has complained about any Asian hate.

However when I did ask one girl if she was going to Chinatown for the new year she said no, it's too dangerous there! I believe that week what's a couple of murders in Chinatown.

But those that want to find racism everywhere will ignore the facts and continue to try to manufacture hysteria and division.

Let me put it this way. If the massage parlors were exactly the same but filled with Russians instead of Asians, would he have still shot everybody inside? If the answer is yes, then race is not the motivating factor.

From the indications so far, the answer to that question would have been yes. He frequented those places, probably because AMPs are traditionally one of the cheapest forms of sexual release that is available on demand. Then for whatever reason he snapped and decided that they were tools of the devil. I don't think it's mental gymnastics at all to believe all of that is possible without the term "asian" entering his mind even once.

Don't interpret that as defending him. The dude deserves to rot in hell and I hope he's executed for it. But part of understanding motive is taking an honest and objective approach to an investigation. Automatically concluding its a racist attack just because it fits neatly into a storyline cuts out our ability to pursue truth.

Truth is important because it allows us to know the best way to respond as a society. Do we look more closely at racist hate groups or at incels as the source of additional potential copycat attacks? Knowing the truth gives us the answer to that. It allows us to know who is in more danger next, a mexican brothel or an Asian market..

Why go out of your way to try to "defend" the guy like you were there with him or are inside his mind? What do you specifically get out of it? It's like some people just can't stand something being called racist. It's so offensive to them.

Whatever the ultimate facts are in this case, people tend to twist themselves into knots when it comes to racial matters. I guess it's sort of a perverse triumph of liberalism that people seem to attach a greater stigma to racism than murder.

How can you say it's a bit of a stretch that race was the driving factor with this? He killed 7 Asians out of 8 people total that's a pretty clear pattern. Why is it easier to say that this complete stranger was a religious nut than a racist? You do know the two can both be true at the same time, right? You also realize that there are a ton of religious nuts that don't go around murdering multiple Asian women in a single day. Regardless of what he said motivated him he went to three separate Asian spas to shoot up and did just that. He could've shot hot girls of all races that were tempting anywhere. He could've killed sex workers in any number of different ways, but he chose this way. I don't know this awful fuck, and I hope I never end up in a spot getting shot up like this as a monger, but I'm a lot more willing to think this was racially motivated than chop it up to happenstance. To completely dismiss this being racially driven requires mental gymnastics at this point.

This terrible event has smoked me out. Full disclosure: A certain area newspaper sports section's thumbnail ads first interested me 25 years ago.

Georgia's new hate crime statute will be ruled on by the presiding judge for whether this crime fits. Regardless-and as others have pointed out: this young man will at least be going away for the rest of his life.

I do find it hilarious, however, to read on this platform, of all platforms, a seeming preference for all public policy of the "right" rather than the "left" when the former is fine with keeping the activity discussed here criminalised, the latter quite the opposite.

Anti-asian sentiment is way up, and that's a tragedy, but it doesn't necessarily follow that every bad thing that happens to Asians during this period is the result of anti-asian sentiment. No matter what your political persuasion, truth should always matter above anything else. It may turn out that there is a racial motive that hasn't been uncovered yet, but the bulk of what's been released so far argues against it.

While there might have been a racial component, I think this is probably right. There are plenty of Asian businesses besides massage parlors. Restaurants, nail salons, etc. Since he attacked only massage parlors, logic would tell you that he was focusing on the type of business.

The simpler explanation is that he had a sexual addiction and this was his way of attacking it. I think someone has to go through more mental gymnastics to prove this was racially-motivated. If it was racially-motivated why did he kill one Hispanic male customer and one white female customer? Yes, white female. She was there with her husband for a couples massage. Also, if you read the Atlanta board you will see that one of these Asian massage parlors often had Latina therapists working.

I have no problem acknowledging when racism fuels people. I've seen a good deal of actual racism in my time and I'm not a fan of it. But in this case there's no reason to think race was the guy's primary motivator. The guy has explicitly told us why he did it. He wanted to destroy the source of his sexual temptation.

There's no doubt that this shooting was simultaneously an expression of self-hatred by this guy. This is common, people can come to hate the thing that they're addicted to, and hate themselves for not being strong enough to resist. Being raised in a religious environment, I've seen lots of guys like this. They hate themselves for their urges to porn / women, and will periodically "purge" or "purify" themselves of their temptation by throwing away all their porn or deleting the phone numbers of women who give them sex. But it never lasts, they always go back to it and the cycle just fuels greater and greater self-hatred, and more extreme attempts to purge the addiction and sources of temptation, and "get clean for good".

San Francisco has a big asian population. The vast majority of rub and tug / FS places are asian. So the women happened to be asian. Maybe race still played some minor role. Maybe because the women were asian and foreign, this guy saw them as "other" to some degree and maybe that made it easier for him to go through with this crime, but I doubt it was the primary motivator. If the guy was surrounded by Euro places, I reckon he would have done the same thing. Regardless of the guy's motivations, he did a horrible thing.

Or he specifically targeted places he had been before and made him "weak". The fact that they were Asian may have been incidental, as it is for a lot of people who review AMPs. Some guys who go go specifically because they like Asian women, but most guys go because it's an easy, convenient, and relatively inexpensive way to get your rocks off.

Agree with this. A deranged sex addict in Atlanta does not have the option of all the Euro spas we have up here, only the AMP. He frequented those most likely, as they are readily available in the Atlanta metro area as well as inexpensive.

Ok, I'd just like to say that I don't have a problem with minorities. I was just trying to say that the demonization of the police is not helping the situation regarding safety in the city. And that's not to say that the cops are never in the wrong, either.

I definitely agree that it's a waste of energy for us to be fighting each other while the scumbag politicians get richer, and worse, more powerful.

You care about nursery rhymes kids books. Got it. When you use catch phrases like "cancel culture" you give yourself away. Discussion over for me I really come get to get away from both sides of the political aisle honestly. And I got sucked in. Dammit.

I wasn't going to involve myself in this because this is far from the reason I come here. But, here I go anyway. I think cancelling the Mr. From Potato Head is stupid but it really doesn't affect me because it has been 58 years since I played with one. And turning it into a cause celebre is a bad idea on both sides. If they had just dropped the title from the name and not said anything about it, would anyone have noticed?

Dr. Seuss is a little problematic. I hate seeing books and art removed from the shelves. But some of his stuff is pretty ugly. He got awfully jingoistic during WWII and his cartoons of Asians are fringe worthy. Even he expressed his regrets later in life. He portrays blacks in a simian manner in his Zoo book, and levels a few more bits of fun at Asians again. But I don't believe in cancelling them out. Use disclaimers. Why not?

But ultimately this was not something decided and foisted upon us by radical politicians. These were private businesses that decided to cease production or alter it on their products. I'm not happy about it, if only because it plays into the hands of the "wrong" people. But I'm pretty sure the Grinch, the Zizzer Zazzer Zuzz, and those red fishes and blue fishes will be safe, and oh, the places they'll see!
