I have changed providers many times and have settled on Tracfone for the following reasons. First, I have always used a burner phone rather than an app to isolate the hobby from the rest of my life. This has paid big dividends for me more that once as a phone gets compromised, lost / stolen, or seen by eyes who shouldn't. Just the plausible deniability of "that's not my phone, I found it on the street" has value. And who hasn't sent a text to the wrong recepient or pocket dialed the wrong person at one time or another. Well, with a burner I don't accidentally text a message to a family member or business contact that I intend for a date. Also, I can't pocket dial family or a business contacts if I don't carry that phone on "dates". I buy Tracfone service by the year for about $100 and if I need more text, voice or data, then I add it for a few bucks when I need it. I seldom use voice and have accumulated over the years nearly 10000 minutes of unused minutes that never expire. Besides cost, the one thing I like about Tracfone is that you can use either the Verizon or the AT&T network, depending on which phone you have or purchase. In my business I have learned a lot about cellular and the coverage patterns of all the providers and find Verizon and AT&T are by far the best. Verizon is generally better than AT&T, but as it turns out in my particular area AT&T is much better, so I pick my phone accordingly. The network provider is encoded in the cell phone part number, if you buy the phone from Tracfone, which I have done, so it makes network selection very easy.

Guys if you want an actual 2nd phone and not an app, I recommend redpocket. You can find them on ebay. As an example if you have a sprint compatible phone you can get one year of service for 30 bucks. 200 talk 1000 text 200 mb per month. Works out to 2. 50 a month. I just use the text free app on my iPhone but I use the web version and not the app so it doesn't show up on battery use either and easy to log on and off.
