When comparing countries, geography and thus climate, plus population dispersion, become important factors.

Sweden raised eyebrows around the world earlier this year when it decided to keep schools, gyms and restaurants open and not issue a national mask mandate, though in past weeks it issued new restrictions such as limiting the number of people who can sit together at a restaurant to eight.

The Nordic country has had 141,764 confirmed coronavirus cases in total, including 4,034 new cases reported Thursday. Just over 6,000 people have died. The tallies surpass those of its neighbouring countries, including Denmark, which has had 50,530 cases and 729 deaths, and Norway, which has counted 21,954 cases and only 282 deaths.

The vaunted Swedish model has crumbled and they have come to the realisation that ignoring the problem will not make it go away. Unfortunately stern measures are necessary on a temporary basis until a vaccine is developed and distributed.

Do you mind sharing what you're basing that on? If you look at the current rates of France, Belgium, and some other European countries that practiced your stern measures, Sweden is not doing any worse (in fact, better in some cases). I have not seen a change in their policy towards Coronavirus. Do you know something the rest of us don't?

Now, if you take into consideration on top of that the socioeconomic impact of these "stern measures", not just on said country implementing them, but worldwide, you have to wonder who the enemy really is? No one knows how long a vaccine might take, or how effective that vaccine might be, or for how long it might be effective. I don't think the world can afford to go hide under a rock while we wait on a vaccine, and I don't believe that's the healthiest thing for the world, either. We can agree to disagree, but we can't agree that you're going to impose your "stern measures" on everyone else.

BTW, I think it's apparent that the rest of the world doesn't necessarily agree with these stern measures either, witnessed by the protests against lockdowns taking place in many European countries now.

Can we finally stop all the bullshit about how one party is going to decimate the other in this election. As I write this, we still don't know who the next President will be, and even after the counting has ended, challenges, recounts, and lawsuits will keep thing muddled for the foreseeable future. What we do know is that this country deeply and evenly divided and that if we cannot figure out a way to work together we are screwed. Somehow, somewhere, reason must prevail.

At least the end of the election will allow us to get serious about the Covid virus. Over 100,000 new cases yesterday shows that our current tactics have been unsuccessful. Why did you stay here? The student exchange program was a result of WWI and WWII as cultural exchange with intent the best and brightest from other countries would come here, get a taste of democracy, and go back to lead their country into prosperity. The J-1 program started by JFK was particularly targeted for this goal during the cold war. That program has devolved into a ticket to the USA. That said, kudos to you coming here legally, you literally won the lottery. Most of us have no issue with legal immigration. Take care of an elderly parent (or look at what is (not) available to veterans) and see the fraud in our system of social services pillaging the social services by illegal (and legal) citizens and see what is left for those most in need who have spent their adult lives paying into the system. Wanting to correct that is not racists, that is fiscally responsible and fairness by providing for those for who it was intended.
