I use a burner app. If you're familiar with these apps they assign you a telephone number which you can then use to text or make / receive calls through your mobile phone. For me, it is the safest way to go as I'd prefer not to own an additional phone.

On several occasions I've had providers refuse to communicate with me because they objected to the use of this number. I understand why a provider may feel their safety is at risk if they don't know, and can't trace, the monger.

So here are my questions:

1. How do they know I'm using a burner app?

2. Are there any apps that can "get around" this problem?

1. Go to whitepages.com and do a reverse phone search. It will tell you. Most texting apps won't connect the call immediately if they call you so that's another way they can find out.

2. Your best bet is to get a burner phone with a prepaid plan. That way, the caller I'd will come back as legit, and if you get robbed by their pimp or something your real phone is safe at home / in your car. Just FYI, Simple Mobile (Tracfone) does not let you set a caller I'd. If you go prepaid with a real carrier, they might ask for and / or use your real name.
