I'd look for an agency or independent that can verify you without a reference. You'll have to ask them if they can do it. Eventually you should find and agency that will. Once you've used a couple of agencies, you can use them as a reference. It might also help initially to try and book a provider that's not as popular. They'll be more motivated to verify you without a reference.

This is how I'd go about it if now. I've been in the game for so long, I guess I've been seeing providers before references were a thing.

The best way to get answers to your questions is to build up what's known as "board cred" by going out, seeing some providers and posting reviews.
