The criticism in that article you cited does not apply to the newer Abbott antibody tests, Roche's, as well as several others, which now have MUCH higher predictive values. Here is the relevant statement:

You are probably mistaking the now ancient deep nasal PCR swab for the antibody test? The antibody test only requires blood be drawn in the usual manner, nothing painful.
