Ever hear of "spoofing"? Scammers are able to imitate phone numbers of legitimate businesses and that includes PDs. If the cops really knew who you were, they'd be at your door. I can assure you that using a burner number, they cannot trace to your phone, regardless of the paranoia some believe.
