Definitely a scam. Never pay upfront. Just because they probably got scammed out for driving miles to a client and got shafted, doesn't mean it's time for a deposit. That's part of the business of getting blown off. It's crazy because some people would pay upfront and get scammed. They only need a couple of those people and they're all set for the day.
