Posts: 2848They have both 30 and 60 day plans
I just checked both the TracFone website and the Walmart website, both show 60 day plans priced from $25 to $35. You have to look closely and be careful what you pick, TracFone has plans that vary based on the length of the plan, the GB's, whether there's a limit on text and calls, etc. And, as another member mentioned, they even have plans for a full year, there's at least one that's priced at $125, that works out to about 34 cents a day! I'd suggest it all comes down to what works best for any individual person, go with that!

I have used a Tracphone for years. I buy air time once a year which costs about $100. This includes text, data time as well, and most plans double the time data, text that are listed on the airtime card. My phone a Samsung Galaxy works on the Verizon tower network. Cell phones work on one of two systems CDMA which uses the Verizon network, and GSM which works on ATT system. If you are looking to purchase try the TV shopping shows.

I picked up a totally piece of shit flip phone a lot of years ago (maybe 10?) for $10 at a convenience store. I buy either the $20 or $30 2-for-1 card every 90 days, occasionally more often if I use it a lot. I can text pretty quickly with the alpha numeric key pad. I keep figuring it will die and I will upgrade to something more current but this damn thing just won't die.
It has a camera and I can send and receive pics. It doesn't understand emoji's, and some girls like to load up their texts with them, so I forward them to my iPhone so I can read them (and, of course, delete them).
My thinking originally was the non-smart phone doesn't have GPS, which made sense back when I was paranoid about being in the hobby. Now that I realize only in Polk County does any law enforcement expend precious taxpayer's money of vice, I will probably replace it with a smart phone.
As an aside, I accidentally left my iPhone in the backseat of an Uber and was glad I had my burner. I called the iPhone and the driver picked up and was able to bring it back to me.
I would probably consider a Google app if I was getting into it today.
Play safe,
C3.

Posts: 1104Update: I did a little research and it looks like the smartphone cards are $20-$30, depending on GBs. BUT it's not for two months, only one month. So, for the lowest price smartphone card, you'd get three months with a non-smartphone flip-phone.

Posts: 1104I think the catch is data. If you plan on using your burner for internet access (and this isn't inconsequential since some use an app for discrete texts), then, yeah, the burner smartphone is a better choice (even at the higher cost). But for just texts and the occasional voice call, a burner flip with poor internet access is a better choice, even with the rather limited number of texts and keyboard issue.

This is one of the areas that Tracfone doesn't really want you to know about: the five-dollar, 1000 text 'top-off' smartphone card will work with non-smartphones. Sometime ago, I discovered that while you can use a smartphone card with a 'stupid' phone, the reverse is not true. It's a sleazy trick but, hey, that's Tracfone. It sucks because it would be nice to be able to use the $20 three-month card with the smartphones but, as pointed out, you have to go with the craptacular $30 two-month card.
And here's another point about data: Tracfone does a really poor job of how it's accessed. It's extremely easy to turn on data via a free wifi hotspot to use the internet, then forget about it. When this happens, after you leave the hotspot, the phone will automatically switch to your remaining, paid data cache and drain it in no time.

Personally I prefer the smartphone. First, $30 for two months isn't a big deal. Yes, it's more than $20 for three months, but it works out to about 50 cents a day. I'm okay with that! Second, it's just plain easier to use! With a flip, each button has 3 letters assigned, the number 2 has a, b and c, the number 3 has d, e and f and so on. Plus, I think flip phones either don't allow pictures and gifs or if they do, they're more difficult to make that happen. Also much easier internet access with a smartphone. If you're good with the limitations of a flip, sure, it's cheaper. On the other hand, if you don't mind a couple more bucks a month, the smartphones are definitely easier to use and offer more options.

Posts: 1104The older, non-smartphone Tracfones are a better deal. You get three months for $20. Unfortunately, I'm not sure they even offer a non-smartphone, anymore. Even their cheapest flip-phone might be now categorized as a smartphone. It's pretty sleazy, but they're still the only game in town for a proper burner since you can pay for everything with cash. All other carriers require payment online via a credit-card, which is a no-go fo ar proper burner.

I went to Walmart, spent maybe $70 on a TracFone. I go back every other month and buy a card for I think about $30, it's for 2 months and has a ton of data, messaging and calls. It works great, is fairly cheap and doesn't have my name or any identifying information attached to it.

So some of you have posts that refer to a "burner phone. " This is a very good idea for me. While I have curtailed my mongering activities bc of the zombie apocalypse virus I figured it was time for me to get one too. I am currently with Verizon so I was looking for a completely different carrier. Can anyone make some recommendations to me with regard to phone carriers as well as what kind of phone? I would like to keep the cost down as much as possible. I'm not on a "tin can and a string" budget but something decent that does the job of good communications and can send a gif or two. Any help is greatly appreciated. PM if you want to. Cheers and be safe!

Guys,
With everything going on and FL will definitely get hit soon, I'm out of playing for a while. I have diabetes and other small shit that lots of us over 50 have and with the governor basically not doing shit to curtail this, I'm not hopeful. It's just a numbers game at this point. I hope to god I'm wrong and nothing happens here, but I'll just stick to my hand for a while, LOL. Stay safe guys! I'll still enjoy all your stories.
