I just am opposed to the deposit idea in principle. If you schedule an appointment with a hair stylist or dentist, or a reservation at a restaurant, do they ask you for a deposit? No. You could hire a contractor to do tens of thousands of work on your house and he'll customarily look for 1/3 up front, not 1/2.

Cancellations are part of life. Deal with it.

I would only ever consider using it with someone you had a long standing relationship with and even then there are risks. Too many fish in the sea, johns are in the drivers seat right now so act accordingly.
