This was this own guy's fault. This is why you take preventative measures prior to meeting with someone. Burners and not providing your real name to start. Also it looks like he may have invited her to his own house? If you're going to do this hobby, you have to be smart about it. Providers are 999/1000 bums who you can't trust.

Sucks that he only got a year in prison. And unless his future pay is garnished, I don't see the "victim" getting any of that 58 k back.

The gun thing probably isn't the best idea, and mixing them with pro's is a recipe for disaster. What if they call your bluff? Then you're in an even bigger hole. Again, they're bums and have nothing to lose. The guy in this story was listed as homeless, after all.

I actually got robbed once by a provider. Wasn't much, couple hundred bucks. It was the whole "BF walks in" nonsense. I told them I knew what it was and to keep the money, since they obviously needed it more than I did. I didn't lose any sleep over it, it's just money after all. The presence of a gun would have made things 100 times worse. What happens if you end up needing to use it? Then the police are definitely involved and a few hundred dollars private issue ends up becoming a much bigger issue, let alone a much more public one. At that point, I'd be praying to pay several thousand to make it go away.

I mainly agree if it is a robbery situation I would just give up the money and get out of the situation as fast as I could. However, if the perps think that they are going to extort money from me long term and threaten to ruin my life they will have a big problem. In most cases these dirt bags are cowards and can not handle a threat to themselves, they usually fold and run. I also agree using any means of identifing you is not a smart idea. Unless you know a provider and even then it is not necessary safe inviting them to your home is not a good idea!! Never use your real name. This is what we need to watch out for. The unfortunate guy in this scam paid out over $50,000. 00 before he finally went to the police. I remember in the 1970's a pimp and his lady tried this on the wrong guy. They never made it past their first payment. He apparently was "connected" and their remains were recoved just in side the Cleveland Lake Erie break wall wrapped in chicken wire after an extended under water swim in the Cuyahog river. The chichen wire allows the gasses from de-comp to exit the corpse and prevent the body from bloating and rising to the surface. After some time the weights let lossse from the wire and the bodies were washed out into the lake. These to brilliant folks were lucky they picked the right guy, at least until there greed got to much and he went to LEO. The girl in the article looks familiar from STG etc. Take note she was arrested at a motel and was listed as homeless. I would never make the first payment. I would simply sit them down at the first meet, pull my 45 semiauto and explain to them that if they so much as breathed a word of my indescretions to anyone I would find them and kill both of them. I would also inform them that since I am dying from a terminal illness I would then simply shoot myself and end my missery (what the Hell does a little lie hurt when dealing with scum bags). I would then tell them to get "the fuck out of my life" and leave them to think about their next move. I really do not know of anyway to defend against this kind of situation but if you are faced with it never, never pay them. They know if they have the, slightest amount of brains exposing you will not make them any money as in why would you then pay them and they do run the risk of you comming after them in a rather violent manner. The poor guy in the article is now exposed as a matter of public record in the court system and is certainly out the fifty some "G's". These two creeps will never make enough to even begin to pay him restitution. In this case their greed did them in. I hope this sends a message to future scammers that they will eventually get caught. This situation exemplfies why it is important to share enformation of this site about scams so that we can become better educated as to the pit fall of this hobby.
