I just learned something last night. If you use Hotwire to book the room, they lists the hotels that allow you to pay the hotel directly. You still need a credit card to book the room, but they will only charge the CC if you do not show up. Then you can pay cash at the hotel desk. You might need to use the CC again for incidentals and they might put a hold on it, but as long as you don't damage anything there should be no charge on the credit card.
