The Gift Card Scam has been going around for a couple of years. The provider who could be operating out of a sweat shop in the Ukraine will usually wait until you are at the in fall or close to it and then ask you to get a certain brand of Gift Card in the amount of the donation. Prior to giving you the room number, she or he will tell you to take a photo of the sales receipt for proof that the card has been activated in the correct amount. Once they have a photo of the receipt, they can report the card lost and receive a cash refund for it and you are left holding a worthless piece of plastic. Of course once you send a copy of the receipt, you never hear from them again.

But tread carefully. Like you said, it could be a setup.

I do know of a scam where the girl will quickly upload the money from the card onto another card while you're distracted and then kick you out for giving her an empty card.
