The "spider bites" we're generally talking about are infected intravenous drug injection sites. Injection drug users are more likely to contract HIV and other nasty diseases, as well as behave badly (like stealing) to get their next fix.

Neither BBBJ nor BBFS is likely to get you HIV, unless you have a cut or sore that opens up your bloodstream to fluids from someone else. Um, not sure exactly where to start with this.

People sometimes have sex with other people that are HIV positive. Sometimes they know their partner is HIV positive, sometimes they don't know.

A known percentage of the population is HIV positive. If you have sex with more than zero other people, there's a known likelyhood that you will be having sex with a person who is HIV positive, based on who they are. If you have sex with a HIV positive person, there's a certain likelyhood that you will contract the virus, depending on what type of sex you have, as well as some other factors.

Given all this, it's possible to determine the likelyhood of you contracting the virus without the pill, based on your behavior. If you take the pill, and that likelyhood is decreased, then the pill is effective at preventing you from contracting the virus, to a certain degree.

The number of people that it takes to determine that change of likelyhood is what statisticians do for a living. There are degrees of error and ambiguity. Good studies acknowledge what those degrees of error are. Having a bunch of different people who know what they're doing look at the study ("peer review") makes it less likely that someone has fucked up or is scamming someone.

Truvada has enough peer reviewed studies out to show that it's highly effective at reducing your likelyhood of contracting HIV from a partner with the virus. The details of that were what Kravon and I were discussing. He and I are entirely in agreement that taking Truvada, and not raw dogging everything in sight (and not getting fucked in the ass by condomless guys) significantly decreases the likelyhood of contracting HIV, to the point where it's frequently not worth worrying about much.

The apparently low likelyhood of side effects, and the fact that if you need to, you can get it for free, would mean that if you're taking risks (and fucking hookers counts as higher than normal risks), it'd be well worth your while to think about getting on the drug.
