I have seen a few posts and certainly some ads about putting down a deposit through some electronic means, I. E. CashApp, etc. Unless you have seen the person before, I would say the odds of that being a scam are in the 99% range. I suppose in a very unusual situation with a highly reviewed provider with a website, etc. And in a seller's market, I might do a small deposit.
