This fever for using "trafficking" to go after sex workers in the last few years is a way for LE to bring more liberal politicians and the public along with their desire to arrest people. Some of it is done knowing there is nothing to it and to increase support for their efforts, and some of it is a real misunderstanding by activists about asian cultures and why women do sex work. The terrible FOSTA / SESTA law is another prime example of this.

There is a movement building to decriminalize sex work, a bill in the NY legislature now. Here's hoping society moves in that direction and reverses this trend.

It's all solely political. There isn't a lot of hope for Missouri on that front right now, but I think if Illinois sees big gains with few regrets from legalizing weed, things could start moving in the right direction on both sides of the river.
