I think your (lackluster) experience was likely due to the fact that you went at night.

The difference of Follies during day and night is, well, "night and day. ".

* There is low (usually NO) cover during the day.

* The racial / ethnic makeup of the dancers is more diverse (if that's important to you) during the day.

* "Stick shifting" and "extras" are commonplace during the day.

* Even though it is usually crowded, it is less crowded during the day.

I make it simple. I just gently guide her hand to my stick before she starts a dance and we are introducing ourselves. If she grabs it and starts stroking it, I go ahead with the dance, if she moves her hand away, I just save myself some time and money. And look for the next one.
