- Google Street View is your friend (for any first visit, regardless of location). Also, Google the address for police activity.

This is some solid advice. When possible I do a dry run by the location, especially if it's a private residence, prior to scheduled appointment. That's not always doable, especially if you can't get a general location out of the provider in advance. I don't ask for the exact address up front, but when they balk at giving a district or cross street, I tend to get concerned. While in some cases this is on account of the provider's safety, I often find that it's generally just a pretense for "don't come see my sh! T hole neighborhood and bail". In the case I mentioned in the OP, I scoped the place out ahead of time but didn't know the unit number. What was probably a miscommunication on my part with the provider may have very well ended badly for me because of what was happening elsewhere in her condo.
