For me, I've found that as long as a hobby phone isn't a google voice / phone call app it won't matter, but providers do check the phone company you use sometimes. I used to get ghosted frequently when I used Google voice until a provider told me that they can use a service to search a number and get the info.

However, even a hobby phone can be tracked back to your real name if you aren't careful. I use Freedompop, its kind of a crappy service but its free to start.
