Based on the threads below I figured I'd relate my personal experience with hsv2. I'm an SA guy. I met up with a hot lady back in May. We had unprotected oral, vaginal and anal sex over the course of a few days. She mentioned wanting to get a test. I hadn't had one in about 8 months, so got one. I came back clean except for being HSV2 positive. I was shocked. I went to see my doc and he said the same thing that was mentioned. The test looks for antibodies for the virus. (1) standard HSV testing looks for antibodies against the virus, not the virus itself.

(2) 50 to 80 percent of adults are infected with HSV-1 (mostly oral). By age 50 90% of adults have been exposed to the virus.

(3) about 2/3 of people who are infected and show up as have positive on tests never experience cold sores or any other signs they are infected.

I think it's highly likely that she had no idea she had the virus, and if so, she probably has a very low probability of shedding it and interesting a sex or make out partner.

HSV-1 or HSV-2 ? There is a huge difference. Almost everyone has HSV-1. Most people were born with it, or get it, and never even know. You can get HSV-1 from a relative when they kiss you on the cheek as a kid, FYI.

If you are in ATL and going to a "shore" that is no small trip. I think it is pretty typical that the sex be free and plentiful in this type of case as are paying travel / hotel / food and incidentals so I tend to take the deal at face value especially if she made the suggestion to go.
