Just to avoid this a awkward interaction I always turn my phone on silent so it doesn't ring and put the phone to my ear as if I'm taking a call. Straight for the room and on a fake call they never say anything outside of a greeting.

I always have that "walk of shame" feeling, too, because I have this feeling that somebody could tell by looking. But then my brain takes over and says, "They're not interested in you unless you look like you don't belong. " If you act like you know where you're going (it always helps if the girl tells you where the elevator is), you're unlikely to be asked anything. I never have been.

I usually say, "No thank you. I just forgot something in my room and head right to the elevator or stairs. " If they're in the hallway when I'm waiting by the door I just knock and wait for the door to open and say "Thanks I forgot my key card" or whatever the hotel uses. Not hard to determine after looking at the doors.
