Back in the day, we had an intern in our office, a Rawlins college sorority chick, and on weekends, she and her other sorority sisters would often go to the places around the Naval training center. This was highlighted in The Right Stuff where it was explained that aviators are better than pilots because naval aviators have to be able to land on aircraft carriers.

Landing on an aircraft carrier is no small task, and definitely places naval aviators on the top shelf.

But I also want to say that you will find that naval aviators are the ones who fly more of the air-to-air combat missions (against enemy aircraft, requiring more skill), whereas Air Force pilots perform more bombing missions (against ground targets).

And for those who may not be aware, the term "naval aviator" includes pilots from both the Navy and Marine Corps.

Sailor, airman and soldier are not capitalized unless they start the sentence, as in this sentence.

If the term for an individual member is the same as the proper name of the organization, then it is capitalized. This is also why in the case of Coast Guard personnel, "Coast Guardsman" is also capitalized, but still not sailor, airman and soldier.

Of course we're only talking of capitalizing the term Marine when it refers to individuals. When speaking of RogerOver's meals, there is no need for capitalization, as in a "sailor shit sandwich"!
