I'd venture to say a gift card is more traceable than cash these days given the crack down on their purchase. For one you have to buy them from a retailer (at least initially). While it would take some digging it's possible to track down the origin of the card's purchase location and most will have cameras.

Many places also limit what you can purchase with a gift card and that list of places includes many online retailers. Cash on the other hand can be used in exchange for goods / services, used to buy a money order and so forth. I think most chicks asking for gift cards are a scam. The only exception would be if she checks the balance in the room or not at all. Chances are this chick would give him the address and then ask for the gift card info to confirm the balance. After he sent the info she'd ghost. There seems to be people running this scam periodically in the area.
