A lot of mongers on this site have an SO. So it doesn't matter if the cases were civil or not. Once your name is out there, there isn't any taking it back. And lets not forget that IP addresses can be stored in email header info. So even if the cops couldn't track you, someone with a little know-how could possibly make someones life a living hell.

Since when was caution ever a bad thing when it comes to hobbying? Ease up a bit my friend, a fellow hobbyist was simply sharing his precautions, doesn't mean they are right for everyone but no reason to get agressive. Having an extra layer or two of security really doesn't take any more effort and it helps a lot with peace of mind. Be safe out there guys!

There was no aggression in my post. The other guy was asking a question. I answered saying the original guy was being overly paranoid and explained why I thought so. None of this was directed at Jadedone. It was in response to Jayp80's question on why someone would need a VPN for facebook.

Torrenting is a direct peer to peer connection. It was the RIAA and select movie studios, not police or FBI, doing all this. You are connected directly with their computers so they can see your IP. They don't have to go through a website. And you are forgetting these are all civil cases. There is a far lower burden of proof in civil cases than criminal cases. In most cases, your ISP would send you a letter telling you to stop doing that. In some, a law firm would ask for money. A lot of times, if a person fought it, a judge would throw the cases out. Just because they had the IP address, that isn't proof that YOU specifically did it.

There's no way police are that hard up to catch someone that they will get a warrant to get the IP used to access the account from Facebook, then get another from the ISP to track down who that IP is assigned to, and then finally get a warrant for an arrest just for maybe solicitation (depending on your conversations, if any).

I am just a bit paranoid about conversing on FB about these types of activities. I am not sure if they track IP addresses. But using a VPN gives me that layer of protection just in case they do.

There's no way I'm going to use my facebook account to see these girls. Is anyone using burner Facebook or Instagram accounts to follow these girls? What are the privacy concerns and issues?
