I know this has been raised before but I don't recall finding out a definite answer. There is some sort of device attached to a telephone pole near Nieman Ave. And Gable Ave. I'm not sure if it is a video camera or what? Did anyone figure it out?

I hadn't heard about it before you asked. So I looked into it.

The street light on Neiman near the intersection with Gable is attached (Thanks Google Maps Streetview! The device on top is not anything related to a camera. . . It's a radio repeater for electronic smart meters. (click link to read more) It collects data from utility smart meters in that area, then boosts / re-transmits that data to other repeaters / receivers used by the utility company.

This article (click link to read) spends a little time to explain it (unfortunately their picture is missing).

The white box below the light is tapping power from the power line, probably knocking it down to the voltage the repeater needs, then feeds that electricity up the black wire to the repeater.

We can probably stop sweating whether similar-looking stuff on other streetlights in the city are cameras or not.
