You can get a secondary number using google voice to call and / or text for free. You can also get notifications through email if you want and turn off notifications for google voice. And if you have Android 6. 0+, there's a feature where you can lock the app with a password. It's in settings Security App Locker. If you want more privacy, there's a popular android launcher called "Nova Launcher" where you can even hide the app from your phone so it won't show up in your drawer.

+1 for Burner. And you can totally turn off notifications so no worries of one popping up or making a noise when you left the cell phone on the table and the wife could see it. Just check the app peridoically to see if you got a text.

Try TEXTEM. It is cloud based so you login. No need to download an APP.
