When or why they went to the previous method I have no idea. The last time I received a blocked message was in September of 2015.

Unfortunately SA doesn't differentiate between whether a member dropped their profile or just blocked you individually but still has their profile. I have often wanted to know myself.

A good thing to do in your downtime is to review all the copy and paste responses you have saved in your SA folder. You do have those... right? Because most girls ask the same questions over and over. And there is no real way to talk to a lot of girls if you don't spend the time to have these responses at your fingertips.
